Beethoven — 7 Variations on "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen", WoO 46 | Mathilde Reuzé

A little world of characters, all born from a single melody. Pamina and Papageno are at the heart of it: her warmth, his wit, their tender duet. From there, Beethoven lets the theme take on new faces: a little mischief, a touch of theatricality, moments of poetry and ardour, and, suddenly, something darker… A little drama, perhaps — although with Papageno involved, things can hardly stay serious for very long. Written in 1801, these variations are based on the famous duet between Pamina and Papageno from Mozart’s "Die Zauberflöte". Beethoven takes the melody through seven contrasting variations, each revealing another side of the theme. Mathilde Reuzé, cello Karine Sélo, piano
